Calvin Shields Author

This page showcases the published works of British author Calvin Shields, whose writing spans memoir and historical fiction grounded in real events.

Calvin’s first book, Dancing the Skies and Falling with Style, is a semi-autobiographical memoir that draws on his career as a commercial airline pilot. Covering his time flying for British Airways, Singapore Airlines, and TNT, the book offers a candid and often humorous perspective on the aviation industry, international travel, and the personal milestones that shaped his life. It also reflects on the challenges of leaving a profession that defined him for decades.

His second book, What Remains, is a historical thriller set in southern France during and after World War II. The novel follows the discovery of a hidden cave containing two skeletons and a mysterious Nazi-era artifact. Through dual timelines—one in 1944, the other in the present day—it explores the fate of Resistance fighters, a secret bioweapon project, and the unresolved consequences of betrayal. The story is informed by extensive historical research and real events, including the Montfleury massacre and Operation Dragoon.

Calvin is currently working on his third book, The Fault Line. Inspired by family history and a cache of personal letters, the novel traces one man’s journey from colonial India through to wartime Europe and post-war France. Set against the backdrop of the collapsing British Empire, it examines themes of identity, memory, and moral compromise.

All of Calvin’s work reflects a strong interest in aviation, history, and the human cost of political upheaval. His writing is detailed, grounded in fact, and focused on realistic character motivations.
