Dancing the Skies and Falling with Style

Dancing the Skies and Falling with Style

At the dawn of the jet-age flying was romantic, exciting and exclusive. Drab post-war austerity surrendered to a less restrained, less politically-correct more vibrant era. Britain prospered and with a newfound sense of optimism, business flourished, and airlines expanded.

Colin Fairdale, an insecure public schoolboy, stumbles into a career as a pilot with BOAC at the end of the ‘Swinging Sixties.’ He is a boy in a man’s world of hard drinking, boorish war-time pilots and a naïf among wild carousing cabin crew.

The high pressure, high octane lifestyle plays a heavy toll on his relationships as he blunders through life.

The terrorist attacks on New York heralded a more serious and rigid age.

Everything changed, forever…

A thoroughly enjoyable look into the life and exploitations of a true adventurer. A very well written story of a boy with his head in the sky, wanting more from life. A young man who dared to dream of taking on the challenges to achieve is passions and accomplished each of them with with the flare and luck of a rogue.

I loved the chronicle style and memories written as exiting chapters. As an aviation couple with over 70 airline years between us, the stories are all so true, so believable I ask myself who was who in his real life! Some interesting stories of earlier airline life that I never experienced mixed with historic explanations from the ever changing geopolitical world we live in. I’m looking forward to a sequel to include some more of the extraordinary characters he shared this crazy game we call life.

A very entertaining read and excellent value for money. BA must have been an interesting airline to fly for as a young pilot in the 1960s – 1980s. If only I had paid more attention at school!

A top quality first book by Calvin Shields. He shows a great ability to describe everything in fine detail without losing your interest. I sense much of the background is based upon Calvins own experience as a BA pilot for many years – a very entertaining read detailing a very exciting life!
